The Red Notebook Movement

There was a time in my life where my ability to grieve was governed by those who no longer loved me.

When my people attempted to reconcile, or even just gain some understanding, they were presented with a red notebook; one that presumably justified the hurtful behavior I was now deemed deserving of.

My people knew that it was not one that needed to be opened. I never learned its contents.

Even still, it took on a life of its own inside of my head for over a decade.

Did the notebook know terrible secrets about me? Ones that even I wasn’t aware of? It felt like whatever was in that notebook could somehow define me. Even if it wasn’t anchored in truth or a fair representation of who I truly was.

The words unseen held me captive. As if I did deserve this treatment and that at any moment, that notebook could pull the rug out from under me and erase the good person I knew myself to be.

It took me twelve years, but I eventually stepped out from under that notebook. I dropped the fear, stopped shrinking myself and decided it was time for a red notebook to come to life. Enough was enough.

I bought 36 to start; 35 in honor of my 35th birthday, and one for myself.

I wrote notes of encouragement, love, kindness and hope inside of each one. Some were letters that I needed to hear twelve years ago. Then I spread them around my community in Florence, Oregon and started what is now the Red Notebook Movement.

I hope these words do take on a life of their own in whoever’s hands they end up in.

I hope they help shape how you feel about yourself and your life in the best way.

I hope that they soften your heart to others and make our world just a little bit better.

I hope the movement continues.

I hope that you will add your own words of encouragement inside of a red notebook for a stranger or loved one to find.

What you do next is up to you. You may send the notebook back out into the world with or without adding to it. You may keep it as your own personal notebook or journal, letting it stay as a reminder to only let the positive and uplifting words hold space.

How to join the movement:

Purchase any new red notebook.

Add a note of encouragement, love, hope, advice, etc., for a loved one or stranger to find.

Print the info tag below and attach it to your notebook or, write in information on the movement so they can locate this webpage to log their find, learn about the movement and get involved.

Then send your notebook out into the world to be found! Think mini libraries, support groups, desk drawers, or in a ziplock bag on a bench. Get creative!

If you live in Florence, I have provided a basket of red notebooks with an information tag for the movement on the inside cover. These do not have messages in them yet, they are free for you to take to get the started as part of the movement. They can be found at TR Hunter Real Estate.
